Friendly reminder: Foursquare check-ins are public

The GPS location-based Smartphone application/game Foursquare recently proclaimed 3 million users; that's awesome, but gives me a tinge of heartburn.

I'm not so sure that folks understand that "check-ins" broadcast to the Internet your EXACT location. And by default, you're name and photo are listed in the "Who's Here" roster for strangers to see. I can think of many situations that make this a not-so smart thing to do.

Worth the upgrade: Pandora One

This week I finally broke down and upgraded my free Pandora account to Pandora One. My motivation: too many commercials interrupting my Michael McDonald radio (You know you love him). My realization: HOLY CRAP why didn't I do this months ago? Here's why:

Geek guidance: back up your files, photos, docs to an external hard drive

Some lessons are best learned by failing miserably. This is certainly the case with me; today, I discovered that that every photo, file, document, video and bookmark on my Mac Book is gone forever. GONE. FOREVER.

I should have been backing up my files to an external hard drive. Like this one, which I just purchased this afternoon.

Friendly reminder: update and reboot your iPhone

That slim and shiny Smartphone you’ve got there is really just a tiny computer. Like any such device, it’s going to need the occasional rebooting and software update. For iPhone owners, there are two recent updates to take advantage of:

If you have a new iPhone 4

How Google Works

I get asked a lot about how Google works. My short answer: "math." I know what I'm trying to say, but I can't explain it correctly because I'm not really hip to math.

Fortunately, there are folks out there who are much more effective at turning numbersy-geek-speak into useful knowledge. If you really want to know how Google works, give this graphic a read:

Addicted: the Vintage Ad Browser

Sure, the Internet is great for progress, innovation and all that. But every now and then, the Internet produces stuff that take us back, like the Vintage Ad Browser. I'm addicted. Who needs the future when I can spend HOURS making fun of the past?
