Get Your Glam On: Prep for a Night Out
A great night out starts long before you order your first cocktail. Ladies, It can take days to achieve that head-turning look to complement that martini, so this month Her Night Out is getting you gorgeous before you go out. Let’s get hot!
Wax Prep: European Wax Center
If the mere suggestion of this hair removal process scares you, read on. The ladies at European Wax Center in Green Hills have calmed the fears of many first-time waxers by educating women about the salon’s process: cleanse, oil, wax and soothe. Instead of strip waxing, the warm — not hot — wax is applied to your skin and removed without paper, creating a less painful experience and eliminating redness and irritation.
After 30 years of waxing, Betsy Wigington thought that painful skin irritation was just part of the beauty routine. “When I married my husband seven years ago, I had an eyebrow wax that left my skin so red, you can see it in my wedding photos,” she says. Then, last spring, Betsy visited a friend in Arizona who suggested they visit European Wax Center. “That day I knew that I needed to bring this franchise to Nashville,” Betsy explains.
Though it isn’t completely painless — “We are pulling out hair, after all,” Betsy jokes — the method used at European Wax Center is much more comfortable than any strip wax I’ve ever experienced. I recently had my eyebrows done and can vouch for the minor skin irritation that occurs. I have had red skin for days after a wax, but this time, all swelling was gone within an hour. It has me seriously considering getting more delicate body parts waxed, which I’ve always been too afraid to try!
Betsy recommends waxing a few days before your event and advises that the hair to be removed is at least as long as a grain of rice. Your wax will last about three weeks, and exfoliating your skin before can make hair removal easier and longer lasting. Betsy advocates eyebrow waxing because it shapes your face, but also suggests waxing underarms, which is pretty painless. European Wax Center offers first time clients a free eyebrow, underarm or bikini wax, so why wouldn’t you check it out?
Skin Prep: Tiba Nu
“Many women think they need several new treatments before a big event, but beauty is about being yourself,” says Nuhad Khoury, owner of Tiba Nu. Though she offers almost every beauty treatment you can imagine from head to pedicured toes, Nuhad recommends a few when prepping for a night out.
Many facial treatments are not appropriate for the day of your event because they don’t allow for makeup, but the Red Carpet Facial will rejuvenate the skin on your eyes, face and neck, preparing it for cosmetics and leaving a natural glow. Tiba Nu offers makeup application packages, including lessons by Nuhad herself, who has many clients visit the spa for special events.
Ladies looking to feel flawless in a tight-fitting dress may opt for a detoxing and slimming treatment like the Frangipani Paraffin Body Sculpt, which draws toxins from the body, reduces weight and “leaves you feeling like you’re light enough to float,” Nuhad says.
Hair Prep: The Blowout Co.
Having sexy hair doesn’t have to involve several frustrating hours in front of your mirror under a fog of hair spray and a tangle of various tools. Don’t even bother doing it yourself, because Nashville now has The Blowout Co., a salon dedicated to blowouts and updos.
Last summer, Leslie Embry was in California for a friend’s wedding. On a morning run, she discovered a dry salon and made an appointment. The experience left her with great hair and a new sense of confidence about her appearance. “I felt pretty,” she says. “I wanted to bring this same concept to Nashville.”
The Blowout Co. offers four different blowout styles — the Belle Meade, the Gulch, the Eastside and the Lower Broad — each named for Nashville neighborhoods. The styles range from classic and polished to voluminous and curly. Not only is the experience relaxing — it includes champagne and cupcakes — but the results can last for days if you don’t wash your hair. I had to try it for myself, and had my normally thin and straight hair transformed into the Eastside blowout of messy, wavy curls. I loved it.
Blowouts are very reasonably priced at $35, meaning you don’t need to wait for a special occasion to visit the salon.
Style Prep: Flavour
“Color, especially coral, is a huge summer trend that will continue into fall,” says Aimee Johns, owner of Flavour clothing boutique.
Aimee, who originally opened her store with country artists in mind, now caters to a wide range of clientele, from moms and college girls to Carrie Underwood and Reba McEntire. Flavour offers stylist services for big events and photoshoots and a selection of dresses available for private viewing (think award shows), in addition to the storefront with fashion for everyday wear.
“The core of our collection includes dresses and tops that are perfect for wearing out,” Aimee says.
You won’t have to worry about being a fashion don’t, because Flavour always has a great selection of the latest styles.
The specter of heredity has lurked in the darker corners of Cheryl Perkins’ mind for as long as she can remember.
Her mother died of colon cancer four years ago, and nearly all of the women on her mother’s side of the family had hysterectomies between age 45 and 50 because of cancer diagnoses.
