Summer Skin Prep: Get Your Skin in Shape for the Season

Issue:
May 2012

We’ve had some odd weather in Nashville this year. After a relatively mild winter, it felt like we completely bypassed spring and went straight to summer. With the hot summer months just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about getting your skin ready for bikinis, sundresses, and those short shorts we’re seeing in all the boutiques. Don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered! We asked local expert Melissa Rhodes — owner and aesthetician at Ona Ultimate Skincare in Belle Meade and GLOW Skincare in East Nashville — for her must-do tips for beautiful summertime skin.

Cleansing

With increased heat and humidity and sunscreen application, skin tends to be oilier in the summer, so try a salicylic facial cleansing gel to remove oil buildup from the pores. Hylunia makes a great double-action, pH-balanced gel that is ideal for oily and acne-prone skin. Powered by alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids, this cleanser penetrates deeply into the pores without causing skin irritation, ridding your skin of makeup, excess oil, blackheads, whiteheads, acne, ingrown hairs and other blemishes.

Another good option is the drugstore fan favorite, Cetaphil, which is gentle for all skin types and won’t aggravate sunburned skin.

Moisturizing

Even though skin may be oilier, you need moisturizers more than ever with increased sun exposure. Look for a formula that contains hyaluronic acid, such as Hylunia Pure Hyaluronic Complex, which helps draw 1000 times its weight in water to the skin. In the drugstore aisle, Oil of Olay makes a variety of great moisturizers for all skin types, and many of the formulas contain sunscreen.

If you’re truly looking for a multi-tasker to make your summertime easier, Revision Intellishade SPF 45 is a three-in-one sunscreen, moisturizer and sheer tint that conceals, corrects and protects. This wonder cream, packed with antioxidants, helps you look radiantly hydrate while preventing future sun damage with anti-aging ingredients like peptides. The original formula leaves a dewy, healthy glow, while the matte version helps diminish pores, and the smart tint technology matches every skin tone. Attention summer brides: A light mineral powder application over this provides a lightweight alternative to heavy foundation and can be the picture-perfect finish for your big day.

Exfoliating

Don’t get caught in that rearview mirror with a fuzzy face! Dermaplaning is the new skincare solution — not only does it remove that pesky peach fuzz, but it also exfoliates the top layer of skin, allowing products to penetrate deeper. This treatment is recommended every four to six weeks and can be done year-round for a healthy glow.

If dermaplaning isn’t for you — it does involve a light scraping process, which, by all accounts, is painless — another alternative is microdermabrasion. This time-proven treatment, a non-invasive exfoliation procedure that also removes dead skin cells, has all the benefits of dermaplaning, minus the peach fuzz removal.

Treatments

For sunburn prevention, clinical vitamin C serums protect from free radical damage, provide an added layer of sun protection to your sunscreen, aid collagen production and naturally fade sunspots. Ask your dermatologist for her favorite formula, or go over the counter with Philosophy, who makes a vitamin C powder that you can easily mix in with your moisturizer.

Already sunburned? Good old-fashioned aloe, available at drugstores, is your best friend. Be sure to use a formula with little or no added chemicals. Got a serious burn? Neocutis Bio-Restorative Skin Cream was formulated for burn patients, and its unique combination of processed skin proteins (PSP) including human growth factors, cytokines and interleukins helps heal a sunburn in the same fashion. Bonus? This stuff reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles after two months of daily use.

The Extra Mile

Ditch that smelly bug spray and buy local with Thistle Farms’ Geranium Spray. This chemical-free spray contains pure geranium oil — an effective bug repellent — and lemongrass, citronella and lavender, creating a crisp, lovely scent. A bug repellent that you’ll actually enjoy wearing? Sign us up!

The sun’s rays can be tough on us all, but they are especially tough on brows and lashes. Brow and lash tinting is a semi-permanent way to wake up looking refreshed, sans raccoon eyes. Lasting four to six weeks, this procedure is great for a beach trip, a weekend by the pool, or any time you want to leave the mascara at home!

For every season you have to prepare your skin, just like in winter in summer too your skin will be facing harsh conditions. Those who suffer from acute acne problem they should be careful, keep your skin clean and try remedies like manuka honey for acne.

Like other seasons summer too brings lots of issues for the skin. So staying prepared helps you to avoid these issues and if you are already suffering with any problem then treat skin problems as soon as you can.

Thanks for sharing your ideas on preventing skin problems during summer. I always looked for natural remedies to take care of my skin during hot season. I believe using chemical peels or whitening creams are some of the dangerous treatments offered by skin care specialists which should be avoided especially if you are allergic and using natural products like cucumber, lemon juice, turmeric will help you stay away from using such products.

Summer could be harsh on your skin if you do not take care and most importantly you should keep your skin hydrated all the rime so drink water plenty of water. But if you feel like you need to remove excess fat from your body you should go for expert solution such as Kovak Laser.

It is essential for you to take special care of your skin when you enter a new season. To keep the skin smooth and acne-free you have to follow a good skin care routine along with following a good diet.

We are always worried about our skin and complexity; therefore to achieve or to avoid skin problems we used to go through several skin creams and skin solution. Basically during summer skin problems are found common such as rashes and many more and to prevent from these kinds of skin problems we are using different skin care products as provided in the above article. Skin cream and moisturizing lotions are quite helpful in dealing with skin problems especially arise during summer.
