Alter-Nation at bonnaroo

Everywhere I looked at Bonnaroo I saw people expressing themselves with avant-garde fashion, handmade clothing and fun costumes. Some of which might have been made at Alter-Nation, one of 9 participatory "art pods" situated around the festival campgrounds where festival guests can take part in everything from collaborative music, to building miniature cities out of recycled cardboard boxes.

Moda dress Imogene and Willie necklace

Spotted near the main stage, this Bonnaroo look features key peices from favorite boutiques right here in Nashville.
The floral print sundress, from MODA, is paired with a long medal necklace from Imogene+Willie, just up the street on 12th Avenue South.

Reconstructed top and pants at bonnaroo

This fun DIY outfit captures the Bonnaroo spirit. The handmade, embroidered pants were made using recycled yarn from the altered sweater top.

denim sundress at Bonnaroo

I adore this look! A great example of how to take a simple denim dress—this one is from Urban Outfitters—and create your own look with accessories. A floppy hat, plastic street sunglasses, shoulder bag and sparkly TOMS shoes somehow all come together to evoke our favorite children's book heroines (Eloise, Madeline) playing dress up, or a favorite spunky aunt. This is what personal style is all about.

two friends near Bonnaroo VIP

Spotted outside the VIP camping area, these girls have great festival style in a figure hugging mini dress paired with short-sleeved parka, and basic v-neck T-shirt with printed mini and riding boots.

White dress and vintage bag

A breezy white dress is really just a blank canvas for accessories. A vintage cross-body bag and thin belt look make this dress look festival appropriate and reveal a savvy sense of personal style.

Bonnaroo leopard-print dress

One trend I've seen a lot of at Bonnaroo this year is leopard-print accessories. Usually subtle and paired with neutral solids, just a touch of safari-inspired animal prints can really work to good effect.
All-over leopard print, on the other hand, is much harder to pull off. This look is especially noteworthy not just because it does just that extremely well, but because it looks effortless. Plain green wellies, a black belt and subtle tribal necklace make this bold look work, and make it look easy.

Bonnaroo shorts and campshirt

The heat at Bonnaroo this year is relentless, so the urge to wear as little as possible is understandable, if not recommended. Smart, lightweight layers are key to staying protected from the sun and keeping your look chic. Here, a stylishly demure camp shirt cover-up and hat take shorts and a bikini top to a much more stylish place.

After a rather long wait in traditional Bonnaroo gridlock, Her Style is on the farm at 'roo.
Already, creative and individual fashion abounds. Like that of the festival itself, the prevailing fashion ethos seems to revolve around freedom of expression and the DIY aesthetic—themes we will continue to explore as the weekend progresses.
Stay tuned!
