Her Health: Don’t Die of a Broken Heart

So many of us worry about breast cancer, and with good reason: it affects so many women. Most of us are aware of the importance of early screening and detection, and as a result, the advances in survival rates have been remarkable. However, in spite of the wonderful campaigns around cancer awareness, our awareness of heart disease is limited. Many women think heart disease is primarily a man’s disease, and very few of us are aware that cardiovascular disease kills more women than all cancers combined.

Her Quest: Random Thoughts at a Wedding

I’ve attended my share of weddings, and each and every one as a single girl.  Ever wonder what we single girls are thinking at these "Events Built for Two?" It depends when you ask.

A Few of My Favorite Things

Like generations of hard-working Southern women before her, my mom’s cooking echoed the limited but comforting traditions of her own mother’s kitchen — fried okra, green beans, and October beans canned from the garden, and in July and August, succulent sliced tomatoes right off the vine. As my mother’s generation came of age, modern life thoughtfully added cream of mushroom soup and fried onion crisps from a can to those good ladies’ repertoires, and thus was born the casserole.

Savor the Day

After a stressful career in politics, I “retired” at the ripe, old age of 31. For the years that I was a political consultant and fundraiser, I can honestly say that I enjoyed it, and that I was never bored. The Chronicle of ME: Kia Jarmon

Growing up in Nashville, my parents always raised me to just be a person — no boundaries, limitations, or hesitations. I was happy and fearless, and nothing was too big or small.

Beauty, Uncensored: Street Style, Blissdom

Lately, my favorite fashion blogs fall into a category known as "street style." The authors of these blogs roam the sidewalks in some of the chicest cities in the world, snapping photos of women and men with inspiring style. I’ve begun using these blogs as a fashion reference far more than the online recaps of runway shows, because think about it. Are you more likely to take cues from a 90-pound woman wearing futuristic makeup and sewn into a leather/fur/chiffon creation as she struts down a catwalk?

Her Quest: Will You Accept This Sunflower? (Why I Could Never Win “The Bachelor”)

Each Monday night I prepare for my standing date. I pull on my romantic floral-print PJs, pour myself a glass of red wine to take the edge off, and plate up whatever chocolate is lying around the house. Then I sink into my couch to spend the evening with my favorite bachelor.
