How Does Your Garden Grow?

"Check with the people at the nursery if you're unsure about something," said Precious as I left the house to get some new plants. He knows my habit of choosing plants that I like, regardless of what kind of sun and soil they might require. If it's purple or wildflowery looking, it's coming home with me.

"Full sun." Not a problem, I'll just move the clay pots around on the deck as the sun makes its way across the sky. "Avoid overwatering." Check. Sometimes I forget to water for days at a time. In my mind, it will somehow work out. In reality, not so much.

It's not smart, probably, to garden that way. Digging and fertilizing without paying attention to the guidelines. But sometimes you just have to go for it, with reckless abandon in your heart and potting soil under your fingernails.

I've found that not following the rules can be wonderful learning experiences. Of course, the outcomes of those learning experiences are varied. Like the time I accidentally killed the calla lily I brought home from my grandmother's funeral (I even named it Chester) and it emitted the most offensive odor known to man. In my apartment. That I shared with 3 other girls. They banned me from bringing in any more plants. So I learned from that experience that I am the gardening equivalent of the Grim Reaper.

We should start it. The bad thing is, I keep trying even after I've been warned. But I agree that going one's own way can teach one a lot. If said individual is willing to learn! Thanks for reading, and for posting a comment.

That picture alone -- all kinds of hope crammed in the back of the car -- makes me feel like this blogger is a kindred spirit :-)
