The Gratitude List
Instead of focusing on what I need to change in my life, I'm taking a moment to honor a few aspects that don't need to lose ten pounds or stop staying up too late. There will be time for resolutions. Like, uh, tomorrow. For now, here are ten things I'm grateful for as 2010 gets started:
1. Patient editors (thanks Ashley and Bryan and Robin!).
2. Friends who know when to feel sorry for me and when to say, “Get a grip.”
3. An 88-year-old mother who continues to inspire and love with great intensity.
4. A church community that doesn’t care if I wear jeans on Sunday.
5. The pile of books Santa left me.
6. Precious.
7. Reconnecting with three friends with whom I’d lost touch.
8. Clarity about what it is I want to do with the next phase of my life.
9. Half-price Christmas items.
10. Another chance.
What are you grateful for in the new year?

I am grateful that today Zoey, my 20 month old, pooped *in* the bath instead of on the (formerly) white bath mat. Yes, yes I am.
I'm with you, Amy. So much to be grateful for. 1. My health 2. My family's health. 3. Wood to knock on 3. The gift of writing alongside great women like you.
Jossle: It's the little things, yes?
HerHumor: I'll see your list and raise you "laughter." (and thanks, by the way; right back at ya')
1) T.J. Maxx
2) Little girls who give me a chocolate mustache after insisting I taste the dessert at lunch
3) Amnesia about medical horrors; my own or someone dear to me
4) Starting a conversation with a stranger and having them come to life; at a store, in a library, walking a dog...
5) Sending a thank-you note to someone who rarely gets one for their service --and--bonus-- hearing how touched they were.
6) Learning that someone I admire has a New Year's resolution was to get together from a great distance
Dear JBWYANKEE,
Thank you for adding to the list! It is my hope for all of us that in 2010 we find many more things, people, and experiences for which we are grateful. My own list increased just today, with a fabulous velveteen floral pillow from Target that's going upstairs in my office; and a book called Breaking Open, recommended by the best kind of friend. The kind who "gets" you even after two decades of lost contact.
