When I said "don't sleep with it," I was serious

It was nearly a year ago that I issued this giggle-inducing, yet, serious warning: get comfortable with social media, but don't sleep with it. I still mean that. So please, ladies, do not take advantage of the new social media service called Blippy.

As recently profiled on CNN.com, Blippy would like to connect with your credit card and broadcast your purchases to your Twitter followers.

For the love of Pete, do not jump on this bandwidth bandwagon. Blippy creeps me out and is a slap in the face to my Web sharing mantra: Tweet with caution, Facebook with care; 10 years from now, it will still be out there.

You know how I feel about technology: when used correctly, communications tools like Facebook, Twitter, blogs and RSS feeds can make you more productive and just plain better at your job.

But like any good relationship, there should always be a little mystery between you and the interwebs.

You may think you are just sharing your credit card transactions with your “friends,” but everything on the Web is Google-able. Or worse, you never know when one of your friends will simply share your Tweet or Facebook post with random folks.

Posting your Wholefoods and Frothy Monkey purchases to the Web is NOT keeping mystery between you and the Internet.  Just say “no” to over-sharing. The Web is not your BFF; even if it is, you should never trust it to keep its mouth shut.
