The new, new Kindle: still not convinced
On the heels of Amazon's Kindle 2 comes the Kindle DX; sorry guys, but I still don't think I want one.
The Kindle DX, which will go on sale this summer, does appear to be on the right track though. It's got a larger, 9.7 inch screen (Kindle 2 has a 6 inch screen) and looks nearly paper thin.
It's not that I don't like the concept (because I really dig newspapers, magazines and textbooks), it's just that if I'm going to carry a wireless device with a 9.7 inch screen, it might as well be a full-blown laptop.
The other issue is price. The Kindle 2, which I already found too expensive, sells for $359; the DX sells for $489. Let's be clear, I'm not saying it's over-priced for "this economy." I'm saying it's over-priced in general. Like if I had $500 I HAD to spend right now on a geek toy, I'd buy seven of these before I'd buy a Kindle.
What do you think? Will you purchase the Kindle DX? If you own a Kindle 2, do you like it? Are you sad that there is a new one already?

True confessions: I'm a book lover from way back. I have worked in book publishing for twenty years, and find great joy in spending hours at a time in bookstores. Although you will probably have to pry a hardcover out of my cold, dead heads, I also LOVE my Kindle2. Because of my affection and respect for printed books, I was shocked by how quickly I took to the contraption, which, as it turns out, is easy on the eyes, looks up words for me on cue, and keeps a charge for days. Late one night I got a hankering for a new book I had been meaning to purchase. Within minutes, I had it downloaded. I plan to buy more for my Kindle2, just as soon as I finish that stack of paperbacks under the coffee table.
I really don't understand this whole "Kindle" thing. If I really wanted to read the newspaper or a magazine, I would just go and get one! I don't need to shell out $500 to read it on a fancy little gadget. Plus this acess to media content whenever we want it, wherever we want it really scares me. Should we be able to have everything we want right at our fingertips? What is the Kindle going to do to the publishing industry? So many questions, yet only time will answer the questions
For 489$ I subscribe to all the newspapers I like for half a life. It seems a waste of money, because I can buy a laptop for 500$ and make a lot more things I could do with this gadget. I doubt that this device has a XML Editor, not speaking about other things I could do with a laptop.
