After much hype, legal action and fanfare, Apple’s shiny new iPhone 4 is here. Hubby and I pre-ordered one each weeks ago and they arrived on our doorstep the day before the phone’s official June 24 launch date. (Squeal!) After four days of non-stop phone testing, we both agree that we are in love; the $299 price tag is well worth it; you MUST have this phone!

...unless you already own the Droid, Droid Incredible or iPhone 3GS.

Hubby and both had the iPhone 3G—a two-generations-old version. So this new phone really is like night and day. But the truth is that you aren’t really missing anything if you already have a phone that boasts a lightning-fast processor, an easy way to shot and share video, an amazing camera, Google GPS mapping, and access to fun and useful apps.

The one thing that the iPhone 4 has that your phone does not is Face Time, the freakishly cool feature that allows you to video chat with the person you’re talking to on the phone. Of course, that person, too, must have an iPhone 4 and be connected to the Internet—but it is a very impressive display of technology.

Since I recently disclosed my crush on the Droid Incredible, folks have been asking me which one is better. I can’t say; it’s really apples to oranges. The Incredible and iPhone 4 each do things the other can’t. It’s really a matter of what you want out of your phone; so, with that in mind:

If you’re on Verizon, the Droid platform phones give you a fabulous alternative to the iPhone and the clunky and unreliable AT&T network. Consider yourself lucky!

If you own a Droid Incredible, please don’t feel like you need to ditch it for Apple’s newest shiny object. You’re phone has many of the same features as—and in some cases, more than—the iPhone. You're still cool, promise.

For you iPhone 3GS owners, as Her Nashville editor Ashley recently pointed out, the recent software upgrade gives you access to many of the iPhone 4‘s features, including multi-tasking, email conversation threading and those neato app folders. So you don’t really need to switch.

Bottom line: if you’re a die-hard Apple fan, or own an iPhone 3G or older, you won’t be disappointed with the iPhone 4. Go buy it now! But Droid and iPhone 3GS owners: hold out. You’ll be $299 richer and will still have super-impressive geek toys to show for it.
